Goddess Nvwa Palace

The Palace of Goddess Nvwa, AAAAA level scenic area, is located on Zhonghuang Mountain in Shexian County of Hebei Province. As the 400-year-old palace, it is one of the five worshiping places in China. According to legend, this is where Nvwa created mankind and repaired the Pillar of Heaven. The largest, earliest and most influential cultural site to enshrine Nvwa is also called the“divine temple of the Chinese”.

The building of the palace began from Northern Qi Dynasty and it was initially the summer palace of Emperor Gaoyang with only three halls and several statues. After generation and generation of renovation and expansion, the palace now covers an area of 760,000 square meters with most buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasty and only 6 grottoes and cliffside engraved Buddhist scriptures from the Northern Qi Dynasty, which is the earliest scripture with the most characters.

There are nine figures to summarize its features: 1 hanging building, 2 religions, 3 grottoes, 4 ancient buildings, 5 inscriptions, 6 scriptures, 7 statues, 8 achievements, and 9 iron chains. The religions refer to Buddhism and Taoism and the chains mean that the Wahuang Pavilion is connected with the mountain body using 9 iron chains.

The main buildings are on a platform at the most precipitous part of the Fenghuang Mountain, people call it“ the work of Heaven” since it ingeniously borrowed the natural terrain. The three-storey Wahuang Pavilion stands in the middle, Shuzhuang Pavilion and Yingshuang Pavilion are on the left and right sides, and other buildings like the Drum Tower and Bell Tower, Liujiao Pavilion, Lingguan Hall, and archway all have their own places. The buildings are harmoniously  laid out but not limited to one type, fully showing the style of Chinese ancient architecture.
