Qiandeng Ancient Town


Qiandeng Ancient Town belongs to Kunshan City. It is 35km from downtown of Suzhou and has a history of more than 2500 years. It is the hometown of the famous patriotic scholar Gu Yanwu as well as the birthplace of Kunqu Opera. Qiandeng was formerly named “Qiandun” and came from the contending for hegemony between the Wu state and the Yue state. The town reserves the Yu’s Pawnshop which can be called “China First Pawnshop”.

The slabstone street of Ming and Qing Dynasties is a unique scene of the area south to the Yangtze River and is the longest and most complete slabstone street reserved in Jiangsu Province. It is as long as 2km, “blue stone under the feet and thin strip of sky over the head”. There are 7 arch stone bridges at Qiandeng Town crossing the Qiandeng riverside of Zhenzhong River. Buildings are all made of black walls and black tiles and are full of Kun rhyme. Major scenic spots include Former Residence of Gu Yanwu, Graveyard of Gu Yanwu, Thousand-year Pagoda-Qinfeng Pagoda and Gu Jian Museum.
