Yunya Temple, located 35km east of
Zhuanglang County of Pinglang City, Gansu Province, is a 1600-year-old grotto temple. In the depth of the Guanshan Mountain, it is renowned for its grotto statue art and as a National Forest Park.
What to see?
The scenic area stretches like a belt; from east to west, the width is 13.75km and from south to north, the length reaches 32.25km. The scenic area features mountains, waters, and trees as well as the grottos and statues that defy the wear of time.
he grottoes of Yunya Temple are reputed as they were built in mountain cliffs. Initially built in the North Wei Dynasty, Yunya Temple was continually repaired and extpanded in the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Dominating the mountains, it is a grotto complex as well as an artistic treasure house with the essences of both Buddhism and Taoism.
It is composed of Hongya Temple, Zhulin Temple, Sanqing Cave, Arhats Cave, Dianwan and so on, each adding radiance and beauty to the other. The 3-tier grottoes of Yunya Temple have layers of niches of different sizes, dotting the cliffs. The bas-reliefs on precipices, vivid and lively, are well preserved.
