Chengtoushan is an ancient city which was built as the capital of Emperor Yan in 6,500-odd years ago. In 1979, the ancient historic site was discovered  at Lixian County of Changde City, in south central China's Hunan Province. 

The historic site was scheduled to be built into a national 5A-level tourist attraction under the guidance of integrating cultural heritage protection with tourism. The ancient town will fully demonstrate to tourists ancestors’ wisdom in ramming earth to build the town and digging paddy rice fields, as well as its unique charm.


Regarded as the cradle of rice culture worldwide, it once owned complete sets of production tools, perfect craftsmanship system, and advanced sacrificial and funeral culture. It was also reputed as “the earliest city in China”, the first exemplar of town planning, and the nationwide model of ancient towns boasting the earliest military defensive system.

Chengtoushan was a round settlement surrounded by a moat and rammed earth wall, which was first built during the Daxi culture. The remains of human sacrifices were discovered under the foundation of the wall. The remains of a gravel road, a river bridge and a river-control gate were also discovered at Chengtoushan.
