History of Tangmo Village
Tangmo Ancient Village was constructed originally in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) according to the architectural styles of that time. It reached its height of prosperity in both the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Upon your arrival there, you will be captivated by the quiet rural life style of this particular culture, and the natural beauty that is incorporated within this famous historic and cultural village.
What to see?
Mirror Pavilion
The Jing Ting (Mirror Pavilion) is in the centre of Tangmo Village. This is where its illustrious stone inscriptions of eighteen famous Chinese calligraphists' factual writings are proudly displayed.
Tanganyuan Garden
One particular spot you should not miss in Tangmo Village is the Tanganyuan Garden. It is said that this garden was established by a rich man for his mother, an old lady who could not realize her wish to be able to travel to the West Lake inHangzhou. Therefore, some scenic spots of the garden which were similar to those of the West Lake were created for her. Softly scented Sandalwood and bauhinia were planted around the garden and a crystal stream trickles through it. Visitors can also find exquisite pavilions and halls beside the lake. The combination of all these features contributes towards making visitors feel both physically relaxed and more spiritually aware.
Water Street
Another highlight you can discover in Tangmo Village is the charming Water Street which is full of Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) features. Despite many hundreds of years' of unpredictable changes it still remains a prosperous area. Here visitors can see various kinds of fish in the crystal water and appreciate yet another local custom of fulfillment. To the south of the Water Street there is a forest of maidenhair trees, the very rare and bright pearl in plants, which can still keep green with a life span of thousands of years. Tanganxi Stream which is also in the Water Street is only around 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) long and has 13 stone bridges of various different shapes and designs. Among them is the distinctively constructed Gaoyangqiao Bridge which is a 'must see' when coming here. To the west of the bridge is a sightseeing area where visitors can rest, and gain a bird's eye view of the surrounding beauty, and also have a chance to appreciate and even participate in the Chinese tea culture.
One valuable point to be emphasized is that this ancient village has maintained its simple and harmonious existence with nature through many dynasties, without being influenced or affected by any commercial intrusion and sophistication. Residents here are enormously hospitable and polite, and they will extend a smile and offer help to each other, and that applies even to a stranger. It certainly appears therefore, that all the local people here seem to be living in both a peaceful and idyllic environment that also includes some of the best scenic landscapes around.
