Originally built in the late of Tang Dynasty(618-907), Diaoyuan Ancient Village has over 1000 years history. During the Northern Song Dynasty(907-1227), because the descendants of the Ouyang family who were the same ancestors as Ouyang Xiu settled here, the villagers respected Ouyang Xiu as the ancestor. The village built the Wenzhong Public Ancestral Hall. The alley made of bluestone slabs is narrow in front and wide in the back. The corners of more than 150 ancient buildings still in existence are curved, and the gates are inclined. There are seven ponds beside the village, which means "Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon". There are also wood carvings, stone carvings, paintings, and inscriptions on the ancient buildings.
The architecture and decoration of Diaoyuan Village are quite Taoist style. It had been bustling and lively in history. During the Emperor
Xianfeng years in the
Qing Dynasty(1645-1911), there were more than 1,300 families and nearly 10,000 people in the village. At that time, there were over 60 shops in the village.
In addition, there were theater and racetrack here, so it was known as "Little Nanjing". Hundreds of miles of government officials and wealthy businessmen often came here to listen to opera and drink tea, so it was a well-known rural city at that time.
