The name, Xunyang, was initially appeared in the poem of Wei Yingwu, a prominent poet in Tang Dynasty, and followed Bai Juyi, a great poet of Tang Dynasty, who wrote the poem “Record of Xunyang”. However, most people attributed the great fame of Xunyang Tower to the wonderful description in the Water Margin written by Shi Naian, a famous novelist in Yuan Dynasty.
In the spring of 1989, in accordance with the requirement of tourism and cultural affairs of the Jiujiang People Government, Xunyang Tower was restored along the Xunyang River, which occupied an area of 1,600 square meters, with 20 meters’ height. There are 3 layers inside the tower, with exquisite decoration of gray roof ridge and red tile, cutting eaves and warped corners. Surrounded by winding corridors, the tower is characterized by a distinctive feature of architectures in Song Dynasty with a sense of simplicity and decency.
Ancient residents used to erect wine flag in front of their restaurant, which commonly referred to as “Jiuwangzi”, as a means to attract more drinkers. After the completion of restoration, a tall pole was erected at the gate of the tower, on which there was a flag with a picture of wine, read “Xunyang River Zhengku”.
