To facilitate patients, the hospital has improved its service by canceling noon break for outpatients. And senior expert clinics are now open even on holidays and during the night. Blood samples are collected at the clinics, and staff at the clinic center will escort patients with severe diseases, help send the patients’ samples and fetch their test reports for free. Patients only need to wait two hours before getting their blood test results, much faster than before; and they can get their CT and MRI results on the same day they have the test instead of having to wait until the next day. Inside the hospital area, patient-transporting vehicles are now available, and numerous touch screens and price boards have been installed to provide patients with clear and detailed information on their expenses at the hospital. In addition, the hospital has also introduced an assistance mechanism to promote the technological development of local hospitals.

 Second Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Xi’an Jiaotong University

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Xi’an Jiaotong University is a modernized large comprehensive hospital under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. As the first affiliated hospital of medical school in northwest China, it was formerly known as the Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of National Northwest Associated University, which evolved from the Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Beiping University (currently known as the Peking University First Hospital). The hospital is equipped with such functions as medical service, teaching, scientific research and prevention &health care. Since its foundation 70 years ago, the hospital has made great contribution to the medical development and people’s medical &health care services of our country. In 1994, it was appraised as a Level-Three Grade-A hospital by the Ministry of Health. In 1995, it was awarded the honorable title of National Advanced Collective for Public Health Sectors by the Ministry of Personnel and the Ministry of Health.

At present, the hospital has over 2,000 teachers and staff members, among which nearly 300 have with vice senior title or above. And there are 24 doctoral supervisors, 57 professors who enjoy special allowance from the State Council and the Shaanxi provincial government, nearly 200 experts who take the charges of chairman, vice-chairman, standing commissary or commissary of national or provincial medical associations, and over 100 experts who are the chief editors, deputy chief editors or members of the editorial board of national medical magazines.

The hospital is equipped with a whole range of subjects, which include 18 clinical disciplines, one post-doctoral mobile station and 19 disciplines entitled to grant the doctoral Degree. The master degree programs cover all clinical and medical detection departments. The hospital’s subjects of orthopedic surgery, general surgery, respiratory physicians and otolaryngology are the key medical subjects of Shaanxi province. Its subjects of dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and urology are the major subjects of Shaanxi province. The subject of traditional Chinese medical treatment for kidney disease is the key subject of traditional Chinese medicine of Shaanxi province. Those subjects as well as the Ultrasound Medical Research Institute and the subject of pediatric surgery are well-known in China. Moreover, there are a lot of laboratories and medical centers in the hospital, including the Key Laboratory for Gastrointestinal Motility Disease of Shaanxi Province, Otolaryngology Medical Center of Shaanxi Province, Medical Center of Digestive Diseases, Medical Center for Skin Disease and Venereal Disease, Quality Control Center of Ultrasound Diagnosis and the Blindness Prevention Steering Group of Shaanxi Province. The departments of cardiovasology, hematology, endocrinology, nephrology, neurology, tumor surgery, neurological surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, infection control, emergency clinic and carder’s health care are very influential in Shaanxi province and northwest China.

Equipped with 1,200 beds for patients, the hospital receives 600,000 patients for clinical treatment and 25,000 inpatients each year. The hospital has purchased a lot of high-tech medical equipments, including linear accelerator, magnetic resonance imaging system, 16-slice spiral CT, ECT, double C-arm digital subtraction angiography unit, several color Doppler ultrasonic diagnosis systems, several full-automatic biochemical analyzers, over 10 sets of fiber hysteroscope equipments, nearly 100 sets of automatic monitors and automatic anesthetic monitors. The hospital has conducted a lot of treatments, including the treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head, scoliosis correction surgery, treatment for cervical diseases, physician &surgery comprehensive treatment for portal hypertension, transurethral resection of prostate, treatment for various refractory skin diseases, urea injection treatment for hemangioma, transperineal treatment of hirschsprung's disease, thoracoscopic treatment of child pectus excavatum, hysteroscopic-treatment for gynecological diseases, thoracoscopic treatment for giant bullous, complicated biliary tract surgeries and treatment for proximal bile duct cancer. Moreover, the hospital is in a leading position in northwest China or the whole country in treating a lot of diseases, including gastrointestinal motility diseases, treatment of foreign bodies in the trachea of infants, tympanitis, congenital heart diseases, severe hepatitis, leukaemia, various breast diseases, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, bronchial asthma, brain tumors, ocular fundus disease, lacrimal canalicular disease, coronary heart disease, complicated kidney disease and complications of diabetes. Therefore, it is widely praised by all circles of the society. Due to nearly ten years’ efforts, the hospital has widely adopted the treatment of endoscopic micro-wound surgery and started the transplantations of kidney and liver. The medical service of the hospital has reached various areas of northwest China. And the hospital’s treatment of some diseases is well-known around China.

The hospital also undertakes the teaching tasks for post doctorates, doctors, masters, seven-year masters and five-year undergraduates. After the study in the hospital, over 100 doctors and masters, 30 seven-year masters and 140 five-year undergraduates graduate each year and go to work in various regions in and out of the country. The hospital is also engaged in over 10 national continuing education projects every year. At the end of 2006, there were over 300 doctor candidates and master candidates, 213 seven-year master candidates and 83 five-year undergraduates studying in the hospital. The hospital has become an important base of training advanced clinical and medical talents.

With regard to scientific research, the hospital receives over 10 million Yuan scientific research funds every year, which include funds from National Natural Science Fundation, funds for National 973 Program, funds for projects of the Tenth Five-Year Plan and funds of key development from the Ministry of Health. There are over 600 academic papers published each year, among which over 20 have been cited by SCI. More than 20 written or translated academic monographs have been published. In the recent 5 years, the hospital has been granted more than 30 provincial and national awards for science and technology advancement. Three magazines undertaken by the hospital, including Chinese Journal of Dermatovenereology, Chinese Journal of Child Health Care and China Medical Abstracts (Dermatology) are published in China and overseas. And the former two magazines are categorized as national source journals and core journals. As chief editors or members of the editorial board, many experts of the hospital participated in the compilation of textbooks for national higher medical schools, including Dermatology, Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head &Neck Surgery for five-year undergraduates, Physician and Surgery for seven-year masters, and Physicians for eight-year program students.

The hospital has carried out long-term close academic exchanges with developed foreign countries and regions. Each year, it receives more than ten groups of scholars from US, EU, Japan, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Meanwhile, it sends over 50 experts abroad for exchanges and further study, which has accelerated the introduction of advanced international medical theories and technologies and improved the overall standard of its own services.

The hospital adheres to the patient-orientated service principles and abides by the requirement of the Ministry of Health for the Year of Hospital Management. Stomatology Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University

Founded in 1985, the Stomatology Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University was formerly the Stomatology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Medical College. The hospital has undergone development of more than 50 years. In 1975, the Dental Medical Department was established with the approval of the Ministry of Health in the hospital. In 1991, the School of Stomatology was established. In 2000, the name was changed to the Stomatology Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University.

The Stomatology Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is a specialized dental hospital under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health. The hospital undertakes such tasks as teaching, medical service, scientific research, prevention and health care. It is the teacher’s training center for the dental medical departments in northwest China, a continuing medical education base of the Ministry of Health, the quality control center of dental medical service of Shaanxi Province and the sponsoring unit of the Supervisory Body for the Prevention and Treatment of Dental Diseases of Shaanxi Province. At present, the hospital has over 270 teacher and staff members, among which there are 46 professors and associate professors, 44 masters and doctors, one doctoral supervisor and 20 graduate supervisors.

The hospital has reached the qualification of a Level-3 Grade-A specialized hospital of Shaanxi Province. Equipped with 130 dental chairs and 76 beds, the hospital has over 60 million Yuan worth of fixed assets. It comprises nine clinical departments, including Department of Dental Body and Pulp Diseases, Department of Periodontal and Mucosal Diseases, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral Prosthesis, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Dental Disease Prevention, Department of Emergency and Intensive Care and Department of Dental Implant. The discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery of the hospital is the key discipline of Shaanxi Province. Several disciplines of the hospital, including the Department of Dental Body and Pulp Diseases, the Department of Periodontal and Mucosal Diseases, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the Department of Oral Prosthesis are the preponderant disciplines of Shaanxi Province. There are five assistant medical departments, including Department of Oral Radiology, Department of Pharmacy, Department of Pathology, Department of Clinical Laboratory and Technicians Center. Besides the treatment of common oral and dental diseases, the hospital also provides various other treatments and services, including reconstruction surgery of ear and nose, maxillofacial plastic surgery, treatment of head and neck tumors, treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders, treatment of periodontal diseases, treatment of mucosal disease, denture repair, treatment of maxillofacial deformities, denture implant and treatment of pediatric dental disease. The hospital will provide high-quality treatment and health care service for patients with oral diseases.

The hospital has set up five teaching and research offices, including Office of Oral Medicine, Office of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Office of Oral Prosthesis, Office of Orthodontics and Office of Oral Disease Prevention, all of which enroll master candidates. The Office of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is one of the earliest units approved to start graduate programs in China. The hospital undertakes teaching tasks of 18 courses for undergraduates of Oral Medical Department and the course of Oral Science for Clinical Medical Department. The hospital also undertakes teaching tasks for graduates, undergraduates, non-degree students and students of continuing medical education. In recent year, the hospital has gained six provincial and ministry-level teaching achievements, three college-level teaching achievements and eight college-level teaching reform projects. Moreover, it has published five monographs and six textbooks. The Oral Teaching and Laboratory Center of the hospital comprises several advanced laboratories, including the Laboratory of Head Phanotom, Laboratory of Dental Technician, Laboratory of Morphology and Image Laboratory of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These laboratories serve as a significant platform for the teaching and practices of the undergraduates and graduates.

In recent year, the hospital has undertaken over 60 projects, including the projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, those of 863 Plan, provincial and ministry level projects and municipal projects. It has invested more than 5 million Yuan to build an Oral Medical Research Center for the purpose of engaging in research of basic oral medicine and clinical medicine application. With the establishment of a well-equipped platform for molecular cell biology research, the Center is able to conduct researches on animal experiment, cell culture, protein and macromolecule nucleic acid.

The hospital pays great attention to promote academic exchange and cooperation with colleges, research institutes and medical institutions at home and overseas. In recent years, it has established cooperation relationships with a lot of academic associations and medical institutions in the US, Japan, Norway and Hong Kong.
