Xi'an Children's Hospital is the largest children's hospital in northwest China and the only children's hospital that have such functions as medical and surgical care, education, scientific research, preventive health care, and rehabilitation in Xi’an and Shaanxi Province. It was formerly the Yan’an Hospital for Communist Party of China Central Committee, which was founded in 1939, and the current children’s hospital, having gone through periods of reform, formally started operation in September 1, 1959 with the approval by the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province. In 1997, it was appraised as a Level-3 Grade-A hospital by the Ministry of Health and granted the honorable title of Municipal Model Unit. In May and December 2005, the hospital was awarded the honorable titles of Model Unit of Xi’an and Model Unit of Shaanxi Province.
Located inside the Andingmen of Xi’an, the hospital covers a land area of 110.7 Mu (one mu equals to 1/6 acre), out of which 87.86 Mu is used for the purpose of medical service. There are 16 clinic departments, 9 out-patient clinics, and 10 medical inspection departments. It has a capacity of 800 beds, 562 of which are practically available. The average annual number of outpatients amounts to over 450,000 and the number of inpatients over 20,000.
The hospital is equipped with well-trained talents. Among the overall 851 staff members, there are 124 senior professionals, 235 medium-level professionals and 735 professionals, which account for 86% of the staff team. And there are 116 administrative and logistical workers, which account for 14% of the staff team. A lot of pediatric experts of the hospital are well-known in Shaanxi Province or even across the whole country. The hospital has a sound structure of divisions. The Pediatric Physician Department is acknowledged as a key discipline at both the provincial and municipal level, and is subdivided into four divisions of Gastroenterology, Cardiovascular, Neonatology and Respiratory Medicine. The Department of Urology is also recognized as key discipline of the municipal level. In addition, the hospital has set up a number of training and research centers, such as Shaanxi Research Institute of Paediatrics, Shaanxi Advanced Training Center for Paediatric Doctors, Shaanxi Prevention and Treatment Center for Children’s Asthma, and Xi’an Rehabilitation Center for Children with a Disability. In December 2003, Shaanxi Children’s Medical Center was established at the hospital with the approval by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Health, and the launching ceremony was held on May 31, 2004. As for hardware conditions, the hospital has increased investment and introduced a lot of large and medium advanced medical equipments over the years. At present, it owns a lot of advanced equipments, including the Philips INTEGRIS CV Digital Subtraction Radiography and Angiocarpy Opacification System (Dutch), the Siemens Spiral CT (Germany), Jostra Extracorporeal Circulation Machine (US), Philips ATL550 Color Doppler-B-Scan System, Automatic Microbiological Assay Machine (France), Olympus Doscope System (Japand) and ASCEND Urodynamics Analysis System (Canada).
Currently the hospital is carrying out the construction of a building for medical and commercial use on the 26 Mu land in front of the hospital gate. Upon the completion of this new project, the hospital will become a modern children’s hospital with more space, better layout and complete functions, which in turn will greatly improve the demand conditions for children’s prevention, healthcare and treatment in Xi’an and the neighboring five provinces in northwest China. All staff members of the Xi’an Children’s Hospital are making great efforts to build the hospital into the best children’s hospital in the west of China.
