The weather is dry and cold. January is the coldest month in Zhangjiajie, with an average low temperature of -1 °C (30 °F) and an average high temperature of 3 °C (37 °F). It snows or rains about 10 days of the month, but usually not heavily. There is about 60 mm of precipitation.
Many tourists appreciate the shorter lines and fewer people in winter, and they love the snowy scenery. Sometimes, the access roads to the park areas are closed, and many people find it too cold for comfort. So it is

January is generally a low travel month unless Chinese New Year falls in the month. During the days of the Spring Festival vacation, expect crowds at the airport, train stations, and bus stations. Visit Tianmenshan: In January, a coating of white snow adds another layer of beauty to the already beautiful scenery. You can go up to the top of the mountain by a spectacular long cable ride. The ride is a thrill, or you can go up on the stairs. If the stairs are not slippery, it would make for a great hike. But make sure your shoes have good traction. There is a cliff walk where you walk over a clear glass walkway and look straight down 4,500 feet to the ground below. Walking up is free, but the cable ride requires an extra fee.

The Tujia people, a minority group native to the Zhangjiajie area, have a special New Year's celebration on Chinese New Year's eve. You might see performances by them in the park. They celebrate with pork dishes and traditional dances on the evening before Chinese New Year's eve.

1. What to wear ?
Generally, a coat, gloves, and a hat or scarf are needed to stay warm. If you are planning to hike or stair climb, then make sure you are well dressed for freezing weather. Wear shoes with good traction.
